January 13th is a Japanese national holiday to celebrate those who have newly become adults. It is called Coming-of-Age Day. Many women and some men wear kimono to celebrate this day. In Kyoto, many new adults participate in the Kudo traditional ceremony โ€œto-oshiโ€”ya(้€šใ—็Ÿข)โ€. They challenge an arrow hitting 1m diameter target 50m away. The number of participants is much higher for women than for men.Men probably don’t wear traditional costumes much.

We Japanese call the first visit to the shrines in the year โ€œHATSUMOUDEโ€, and do it as a tradition. At Hatsumoude, we wish New Yearโ€™s health, happiness, and so on.
We can see Mikomai , a kind of dance performed by miko (shrine maidens) there.
It is a performance with a traditional music and a dance dedicated to the Shinto gods.

In Japan, it has believed that Toshigami-sama (God of new year)comes to each family to bring happiness on New Yearโ€™s day.But God only visits when he is invited.
The Kadomatsu decorations take on the role of sign at an entrance to welcome God. We believe the (pine) tree is a place where the sprits of the deities live.
The bamboo symbolizes strength and growth.
On the porch or the entrance door it is placed the shimekazari, a small rope made from rice straws, with carefully crafted “zigzag“-shaped paper strips called shide.
โ€Zigzag“-shaped can be translated as โ€œfrom generation to generation“.

The Constitution of Japan ใ€€article 1.
ใ€ŒThe Emperor shall be the symbol of the state and of the unity of the people, deriving his position from the will of the people with whom resides sovereign power.ใ€
Japanese history did not have the dynasty change. This is because the Emperor was virtually the symbol from ancient times. (the Emperor is called TENNO in Japanese, and itโ€™s concept is different from Western Emperor. The Emperor is the source of authority, but the political power was the winner of each era. It was noble in ancient times, samurai in the middle and early ages, and military in modern times. He has no political rights and abilities. The weakness of the Emperor who has no power sometimes caused misery of the times. The 126th Emperor โ€œNaruhitoโ€ was born in 1960. I was born in 1958. I and he are the same generation. I have already retired. He is finally here. Neither I nor he know the times of war. I and he grew up in an economically rich era. He declared today that his mission as the symbol is national happiness and world peace. I will do my best to contribute to the friendship and peace of the nations with Karate.
